Fillings Explained
Natural filled products
Tried and tested for hundreds of years, natural filled pillows and duvets are fantastic insulators and are highly breathable. This means you are kept warm at night but your natural filling will help make sure you don’t overheat your body.
John Cotton natural pillows and duvets are filled with either Duck or Goose down or feathers and sometimes a mixture of the two.
Down comes from the breast area of a Duck or Goose and, because it has no quills, it is both softer and lighter. The higher the percentage of down in a product the more luxurious it will feel. A down rich product will feel very light whilst still offering you warmth. Perfect if you like to feel warm but not weighed down.
Feather quilts are less expensive than down. They are equally as warm but to achieve this they need more filling and so can be a little heavier. Great if you like to feel enveloped by your duvet!
Our natural filled range of products are all machine washable at 40°C and will plump back up to their original shape once dried. Our duvets are all made with a special box construction; this helps to keep fillings evenly spread out throughout the duvet and helps to avoid hot and cold spots.

Synthetic filled products
If you prefer a man-made filling for your duvet or pillow there are numerous synthetic fillings available with different properties. The millions of tiny fibres found inside the synthetic quilts and pillows can range from spring-like, to allow them to bounce back into shape, to hollowfibres to give that extra loft and keep the warmth in, to microfibres which are so tiny they give the softest down-like feel. John Cotton’s range of synthetic filled pillows and duvets use these soft polyester fibres to provide man-made alternative fillings that will keep the feather fillings on their toes!
Once the fibre filling has been selected the way in which it is shaped can too change the features of the quilt or pillow. Fibres can be in smooth layers or in tiny ball clusters, particularly good in pillows for keeping air circulating around your head whilst you sleep.
Whatever your requirement all our hollowfibre duvets and pillows are washable, durable and great value for money.
